The World Atlas of Tattoo, published a few days ago by Yale University Press, Naga from Nagaland, Abhinandan ‘Obi’ Basu from Kolkata and Manjeet Singh from Delhi, performs world tattoo art.
“I really wanted to make the book globally as many so-called global books on tattoos omit many regions such as India, the rest of South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa”, said American tattoo historian Anna Felicity Friedman, who compiled the book has, opposite PTI.
She explained that the main aim of the book was to document the revival of indigenous practices.
“I also wanted to show the modern, groundbreaking tattoo art created in places that you might not expect from a European or North American point of view”, said Friedman, adding that she was pleased to find an incredible variety of styles and outstanding artists.
In terms of Basus work, Friedman expressed her admiration for bringing a unique Indian touch to the dotwork and mandala-inspired designs.
The artist, living in Calcutta, is known for his special, personalized body art called ‘Bongo’, inspired by the Bengali folk art form ‘Patachitra’ (role painting) and the works of legends such as Jamini Roy.
He has also developed a unique form of tattooing that he calls ‘Colour Dotwork’ to create sacred geometric patterns and optical illusions.
